Show notes

In this episode of BE with Champions, Greg Bennett chats with Ironman World Champion and two-time 70.3 Ironman World Champion, Sebastian Kienle.

Together Greg and Sebastian discuss how Sebastian became involved in the world of Triathlon. Sebastian describes his journey from his youth until the present day.

Sebastian describes how he couldn't sit still and how competitive he was as a kid. And at times he wasn't proud of his behavior, including when he destroyed the ping-pong table when he lost to his brother in a town tournament.

He found Triathlon and loved everything about it... the people, the gear, and the training and racing. Plus, it was a great outlet for his energy and competitiveness.

It wasn't long before Sebastian made a name for himself in non-drafting Triathlon. Although, he would have loved to have gone to the Olympics, the swim has never been his strength and is a constant work in progress.

By the age of 28 he won the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. And even though many thought it was a fluke and the rest of the field let him ride away he quickly silenced the critics to defend his title a year later with the exact same race tactics and another IM 70.3 World Championship Title.

Next came the big one. His Ironman World Championship win in the 2014 event. An incredible three years of World Titles. He's continued to podium at the Ironman and 70.3 World Championships several times since. The win at either event has eluded him but he's always one of the key players at any of these championship events.

He's surrounded himself with an incredible team including his wife Kristina, Coaches, and physiologists.

His approach to the mental aspects of the sport is incredible. He balances expectations... keeping enough to fuel himself but not so much to hurt his performances.
